Technician work involves the installation, operation, maintaining, servicing, monitoring, troubleshooting and fixing of equipment used in the petroleum industry.
Drafting CAD Technician
Drafting Technicians prepare engineering designs and drawings in multidisciplinary engineering teams or in support of engineers, architects or industrial designers. This expertise addresses operational, conceptual, design and construction drawing needs, and includes the management of drawings and drawing control across areas of the organization.
Education: Post-secondary diploma in engineering design and drafting technology. Experience in AutoCAD operation, engineering design and drafting.
Electrical Technician
Electrical Technicians lay out, build, test, install, troubleshoot and repair electronic components, parts, equipment, and systems, such as computer equipment, control instrumentation, and instrumentation panels, in the oil and gas industry. They usually work under the direction of engineering staff.
Typical roles in this occupation include:
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) They program, test and troubleshoot process control equipment and system components. They repair, install, troubleshoot and maintain electronic, electrical, pneumatic and mechanical control systems.
Education: Post-secondary diploma in electrical or electronics engineering technology, computer engineering technology, telecommunications technology or an equivalent discipline.
Instrumentation Technician
Instrumentation Technicians operate and maintain electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They may work with engineers and others to design, specify, size and select measurement and control systems. Instrumentation Engineering Technicians may also program and configure microprocessor-based measurement and control systems or oversee diagnostic programs and the installation of instrumentation systems.
Instrumentation Technicians coordinate with other trades or vendors involved with construction or ongoing maintenance activities. They work with pneumatic devices, control valves, electronic instruments, digital logic devices, computer-based process controls and control system design.
Education: Post-secondary diploma in instrumentation or electrical engineering.
Mechanical Technician
Mechanical Technicians are responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and overhaul of mechanical systems used in the oil and gas industry, such as downhole tools, pumps, generators, motors and turbines.
Mechanical Technicians have a thorough knowledge of mechanical systems and are able to quickly troubleshoot problems.
Mechanical Technicians carry out planned or unplanned maintenance and repair activities on a wide range of equipment e.g. pumps, engines, turbines.
This role is vital to the safe and effective delivery of offshore production/onshore processing of oil and gas or in ensuring that plant and equipment used onshore and offshore is in a safe condition and meets safety and technical standards.
Education: High school diploma.
Valve Technician
Valve Technicians are responsible for installing, maintaining, inspecting, testing, dismantling, cleaning, and repairing mechanical regulating and controlling devices used to control, direct and measure the flow of oil and gas at the wellhead through gathering lines, pipelines and in plants. This includes equipment such as electric meters, gas regulators, thermostats, safety and flow valves.Mechanical aptitude along with specific technical training on valves and valve repair.
Education: High school diploma is required.
